Summary: Safety Check collects your location, phone number, and emergency contact details solely to provide its safety monitoring service. We never sell your data, never use it for advertising, and only share it with the emergency contact you designate — and only during an active safety alert.

2 Data We Collect

We collect only what is strictly necessary to provide the Safety Check service. Here is a complete list of every category of data we collect:

CategoryData collectedWhy we need itLegal basis
Account dataName, phone number, city, country, postal codeTo identify you in emergency alerts sent to your contactContract performance
Emergency contactContact name and phone numberTo call and SMS this person during a safety alertContract performance
Location dataGPS latitude and longitude (background access)

Background location justification: Safety Check requires background location access to capture your last known GPS coordinates at the exact moment a safety alert is triggered, even when the app is closed. Without background access, your emergency contact would not receive your location if you are unable to open the app during an emergency. Location is only sampled at check-in events and during active alerts — never continuously.

Live GPS tracking: When you miss a check-in and do not respond to reminders, SafetyCheck activates a live GPS session. Your device sends a location update every 15 seconds for up to 2 hours. These updates are stored securely and streamed to your emergency contact via a private, time-limited tracking link included in the alert SMS. The session ends automatically when you confirm you are safe, or after 2 hours. Live GPS tracking only activates on a missed check-in — never during normal app use.

  • We do not collect health or medical information
  • We do not track your browsing history or app usage beyond Safety Check
  • We do not access your contacts list, photos, microphone, or camera
  • We do not collect any data for advertising or profiling purposes
📵
Mobile number non-sharing policy: Your mobile phone number and your emergency contact's mobile phone number are collected solely to operate the Safety Check service. We do not sell, share, rent, or disclose any mobile phone numbers to third parties for marketing, advertising, or any purpose other than delivering safety alerts as described in this policy.

3 How We Use Your Data

We use your personal data exclusively for the following purposes:

📱
Message frequency & rates: SafetyCheck sends you scheduled check-in push notifications based on the frequency you configure (default: every 24 hours). If you do not respond to a check-in, up to three (3) reminder notifications will be sent, spaced five (5) minutes apart. If you still do not respond after these reminders, SafetyCheck will contact your designated emergency contacts via SMS and automated phone call, escalating through your contact list (up to three contacts on the Basic plan, with up to three call attempts per contact) until one of them acknowledges the alert by pressing "1" during the call. Message frequency may vary based on your check-in response activity and configured schedule.

Message and data rates may apply. Standard SMS and call rates charged by your mobile carrier may apply to messages and calls received from SafetyCheck. You are responsible for any charges imposed by your carrier. SafetyCheck is not responsible for any fees your carrier charges in connection with these messages or calls.

SMS opt-out: Emergency contacts who receive SMS alerts from SafetyCheck may reply STOP to any message to opt out of future alerts. A confirmation message will be sent acknowledging the opt-out. To opt back in, the app user must re-add the contact in the SafetyCheck app.

SMS help: Reply HELP to any SafetyCheck SMS for support information. You may also contact us at [email protected].

SMS sender: SafetyCheck sends SMS messages from US long code numbers registered under the A2P 10DLC programme with US carriers, and from the alphanumeric sender ID "SafetyCheck" in countries where supported. SafetyCheck does not use shared short codes.
